The WCCS Connection

Summer 2025 | Connecting the Community to Whitley County Consolidated Schools

Welcome,

As we begin the 2025–2026 school year, I want to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome on behalf of the leadership team at Whitley County Consolidated Schools. Each new academic year brings fresh opportunities to grow, lead, and innovate and this year is no exception.

Our vision remains clear to prepare all students for success in a rapidly changing world by delivering high-quality education, supporting the whole child, and working collaboratively with our families and community. This school year, we will continue this important work through three strategic goal areas that serve as the foundation of our district’s continuous improvement efforts.

Improve Student Outcomes Through Data-Driven Instruction and Strategic Program Implementation
We are committed to using common assessments and regular student performance data, including ILEARN checkpoints, to drive instruction and implement timely interventions across all grade levels.

At Columbia City High School, we will complete the final phase of the School Improvement Grant, embedding the “CCHS Way” as a sustainable, daily practice that fosters academic excellence and school culture.

We will implement Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) with fidelity, aiming for measurable reductions in the number of students below grade-level proficiency in both ELA and Math.

Teachers across all schools will be supported in using data to inform planning, with a focus on increasing student proficiency on common assessments.

Strengthen School Culture and Community Engagement
Our new initiative, Project Safe Horizon, will launch this fall to enhance student safety and well-being while addressing bullying through proactive, data-driven strategies and student leadership.

We will continue to prioritize transparent, consistent communication with families and community members through newsletters, public forums and engagement events at every building.

Our schools will build and maintain meaningful partnerships with local organizations to align resources with district needs and broaden the support network available to our students.

Lead with Fiscal Responsibility and Organizational Readiness
We will conduct budget overview sessions and share clear, accessible budget summaries to promote understanding and transparency around district finances.

Through targeted leadership development, we will build capacity across departments by identifying emerging leaders and ensuring continuity of operations through shared leadership structures and cross-training.

Together, these goals represent our shared responsibility to create a district where all students can thrive. We are grateful for the dedication of our staff, the support of our families, and the involvement of our greater community. Your continued partnership makes this work possible and successful.

We are excited for all that lies ahead and look forward to working together to make 2025–2026 a year of purpose, progress, and Eagle P.R.I.D.E.!

Eagleview Online Extends Application Deadline

As education continues to evolve, so do the needs of our students and families. Whether it’s due to health reasons, competitive sports, academic pacing, or the desire for a more personalized experience, today’s learners benefit from options that go beyond the traditional classroom.

That’s where Eagleview Online, Whitley County Consolidated Schools’ virtual K–12 school, comes in.

Launched in the 2024–2025 school year, Eagleview Online was created with a thoughtful, focused approach. Rather than open enrollment to the masses, the district strategically marketed the school to a small group of families—including current online learners and homeschoolers—to ensure that the program started strong and served students well right out of the gate.

“Our goal was to give this new school a solid foundation. We hovered around 10 students each semester and focused on quality over quantity. It’s been exciting to see students thrive in an environment that’s flexible, personalized, and supportive,” said Kyle Nelson, Director of Eagleview Online.

Back to School Safety

As we get ready to send the kids back to school, we remind drivers how to approach a school bus.

Remember to slow/caution for flashing yellow and stop for flashing red lights.

Kids should be reminded:

  • Be at the bus stop 5 minutes early

  • Wait 10 feet off the road

  • Wear bright clothes

  • Do not approach the bus until the bus stops and all the red lights are flashing

  • When crossing the road, look to ensure traffic is stopped

  • Find your seat quickly. If your bus has seat belts, buckle up

Significant Gains in Student Attendance

With the changes to the WCCS attendance policy last year, as a result of state legislative changes, WCCS saw tremendous growth in student attendance.

Columbia City High School reported a substantial increase in student attendance for the 2024–2025 academic year. Monthly comparisons show an average 2.34% improvement in attendance compared to the previous school year. Additionally, the number of students missing 10 or more days decreased by 22%, and 61% of students are now meeting or exceeding the 95% attendance benchmark. Notably, 27 students have achieved perfect attendance this past school year.

This improvement reflects the positive impact of recent attendance initiatives, including the implementation of a revised district-wide policy and the appointment of a Dean of Attendance. These efforts support our ongoing commitment to student achievement and well-being.

We thank our students, families, and staff for their continued partnership in making daily attendance a priority.

Academic Achievement Update: ILEARN & SAT

Whitley County Consolidated Schools is proud to share recent highlights from the 2024–2025 ILEARN assessments (grades 3–8) and the SAT for high school juniors. These results demonstrate our deep commitment to academic excellence and improvement.

ILEARN
Our students have matched or surpassed state proficiency metrics, particularly in mathematics, where grades 5-8 have each improved by at least 1% and grade 8 math improved by 6.1% to meet state standards.

The district averaged 46.7% for the ILEARN Science tested in grades 4 and 6.

SAT
Approximately 55% of Indiana students met SAT benchmarks in reading and writing, maintaining stability from the prior year. Columbia City High School had 57% of the junior class meet the benchmark in English, Language Arts. CCHS Grade 11 also met the state benchmark for math at 25%.

AP Testing
AP students must earn a 3 or higher on their AP exam to earn the college credit for that course. The state averaged 67% and CCHS AP students had 77% pass with a 3 or higher.

We applaud teachers, Stacy Keener and Chris McGehee, for their students that had a 100% pass rate on their AP tests in AP Literature and Composition and AP Psychology! Keener teaches the AP Lit and Comp class while McGehee teaches the AP Psychology course.

At WCCS, we continue to implement targeted interventions, benchmark-based instruction, and differentiated supports that help more students reach academic benchmarks state and nationally.

These data points guide our ongoing plans for literacy and math instruction enhancements, curriculum alignment, and student support structures including checkpoint assessments and family-centered reporting, implemented district-wide.

Thank you to our dedicated educators, families, and students for your commitment to learning and growth.
